Health And Safety

Safety
Safety is our top priority at Grenville House and as a consequence we have an excellent safety record. The buildings are comprehensively covered by a fire detection and protection system, which is certificated to Hotel 'L2' standard. This is serviced and reviewed annually by an accredited company.
Fire drills are carried out upon the arrival of all groups and all extinguishers are checked on a weekly basis whilst emergency escape lighting is checked every month.
For safety and comfort there is a No Smoking policy covering the whole site.
Every 1-2yrs the centre is inspected by the Environmental Health department of Torbay Council as are the catering facilities.
All electrical equipment is inspected annually as well as the electrical system in the whole centre.

AALA inspect Grenville House every two 2 years, whilst the RYA and BCU also carry out annual inspections, specifically to ensure that we operate to their nationally recognised standards for the provision of Sailing and Canoeing.

Internal maintenance and replacement systems for all specialist activity equipment are carried out on a structured basis. Any equipment deemed unsuitable is immediately repaired or replaced.
All aspects of the operation are fully 'Risk Assessed' annually and updated as appropriate on an ongoing basis. 'Safety and Operating Instructions' are reviewed annually and issued to all visiting group leaders. This is the policy document to which Grenville House adheres in all areas of its operation. As a general guideline Grenville House adopts the 'Outdoor Education, Visits and Off-site Activities' - Health and Safety Policy for Torbay Council Establishments as its minimum standard.
All staff employed by Grenville House are interviewed prior to employment and references obtained to support their appointment. All new staff are security checked through the Criminal Records Bureau.
All Instructional staff are fully qualified 'First Aiders' and there is a local Medical centre 2 minutes from the centre.
The Centre is inspected annually by

• The Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority (AALA)

• The Royal Yachting Association and British Canoe Union

• The Environmental Health Department of Torbay Council

• A qualified electrician to ensure all electrical equipment and electrical supplies are safe

• Dart Fire - Annual Safety Check

Security
Entry onto Grenville House property is clearly signed as restricted only to those who have business to do so.
Coded door locks the number to which is known only to centre staff and the current residents protect all doors into the centre. This number is changed on a regular basis.
All permanent staff are introduced to new arrivals via a photo display in the main entrance hall and upon the arrival of the new group. Any official visitors are instructed to ring the doorbell at the front door and await assistance, whereupon they will be issued with a 'Visitor' badge and are logged in to the 'Visitor' record book.
All activity groups are supervised at all times whilst on activities by at least one adult, although usually two- a centre instructor and a teacher/leader.
